The Pros And Cons Of A Full Body Scan

By David Lee

This refers to scanning the patients entire body. This is a part of diagnosing and treating illnesses. It is called as full body CT scan when a computed tomography technology is used when scanning. Aside from this, there are also a lot of other imaging technologies that can be used for performing the scan. CT scans are considered as the most common procedure and these may have may possibly result to risks and as well complications.

When compared to some other imaging procedures, the result of CT scans may be a high exposure to radiation. The exposure is often associated to having a small increase of cancer risk. A full body scan will be taking series of images of the lungs, pelvis, heart, and abdomen of patients. The images are specifically very thin and are formed like cross sectional slices in the bodies interior. Reassembling the slices using a computer will provide the doctors with the detailed views of the organs, tissues, and bones.

The devices that are being used for the procedure are referred to as full body scanners. The result of images depend upon the technology type. This may be either alternative wavelength images of naked bodies or cartoon like images of people. These scanners detect the non metal items and not like metal detectors.

Here are some benefits that you can get from these scans. These make sense for symptoms. Generally, body scans are considered as the most helpful way of diagnosing specific diseases and abnormalities of a person. These are excellent aids for the verification of size, location, and existence of tumors, detecting the disorders in muscles and bones, aneurysms, and some other injuries.

However, scientific evidences on the demonstration of the computed tomography scans are not yet proven for detecting the diseases. So therefore, an administration for the food and drugs did not approve it yet to become the general tool to be used in screening. Another information of detection that the scan will be able to tell is a calcium amount inside arteries.

Because of this information, doctors can be able to tell about the calcifications in the arteries which can indicate if the person have cardiovascular diseases. Aside from a CT scan which is very expensive, people may not need to pay for this anymore because of the new alternatives. These cheaper alternatives are heart and the coronary calcium scan. Scans such as the computed tomography is considered as one effective detecting device for lung and colon cancers based on an on going research.

However, these technologies may also have some disadvantages. One is cannot tell some common problems for the health such diabetes and hypertension. The technology will not also look at the legs, feet, or head. And so if you have problems on those parts, it cannot be determined. And lastly, this is not considered as reliable compared to traditional techniques of screening such as finding cervical and breast cancer.

The results of it may possibly be faulty. It may sometimes detect some lesions and growth which are not dangerous to the health like scar tissues from the previous infection of the lungs or benign cysts on ovaries. Because of this, you may need to undergo further tests due to unclear results.

Yielding some negative results. Sometimes, the results are clean even if a person has health problems. Similar to not detecting some common diseases like small cancer tumors and hypertension.
